ADVOCACY
WHAT IT WAS LIKE THEN
When I was cast in MTV's hit show Laguna Beach in 2005 my life changed forever. Everything became a whirlwind that continued to follow me through to the next TV show, The Hills. Things got bad and out of control pretty quickly in the throes of active disease. The entertainment industry added fuel to the fire, with easy access to drugs and alcohol. It helped me to hit my bottom very fast. Viewers witnessed as my addiction publicly spiraled out of control, ultimately leading up to a suicide attempt. In 2010, I was finally willing to surrender and admit that I was powerless over drugs and alcohol. I reached out for help, and in return was given one of the best gifts of my life: Recovery.
WHAT IT’S LIKE NOW
Since then, I have been a recovery advocate, supporting, promoting, and sharing my story to provide education, insight, and hope for those who are still struggling. Through my transformational work in the treatment industry, I learned a lot from mentors like Dr. Drew, Tim Storey, Bob Forrest, Michael S. Netherton, and Dr. Daniel J. Headrick. I use my personal experiences as a platform to be of service as a national spokesperson and public speaker on the subjects of mental health and recovery.
My work on TV, media interviews, publications, social media, city council meetings, seminars, school engagements, and blogs are all amazing vehicles to spread the message that transformation is possible. As an advocate I also continue to guide individuals in need, helping them to find resources, adequate facilities, and a safe place for healing when they don't know where to turn.
